Intermedia frottage: visual representation of music and aural representation of image

The Intermedia Frottage collection documents the development of a compositional method for using graphic synthesis techniques to create sounds from images, and images from sounds. The products of these processes are then layered and arranged in cohesive, meaningful combinations. Moving back-and-forth between the two mediums in this dynamic interaction, a narrative interplay develops, connecting the materials created. Together with the sound compositions, the canvases and artists’ scorebooks tell this story. 
The collection consists of:

200pp. exegesis, text with 48 coloured figures,
14-track CD sound recording,
Exhibition collection of 6 artists books and 10 giclee (digital print) canvases,
DVD of images exhibition canvases and artists books,
Exhibition copies of 14-track audio CD.

The collection represents the complete body of work submitted by Melissa Carey to complete her PhD. The collection was exhibited at the Southern Cross University, NEXT Gallery as an installation of visual artworks accompanied by headphone listening stations with copies of the audio CD.
