Skin metagenome of human polyomavirus 7 (HPyV7)-associated skin eruption

Since its discovery in normal skin, 5 cases of HPyV7-associated rashes have been reported in immunocompromised hosts. We present an in-depth evaluation of a renal transplant recipient with a pruritic HPyV7-associated eruption that resolved with reduction of immunosuppression and treatment with acitretin. Metagenomic sequencing of this individual revealed enrichment of HPyV7 on skin. In our study, we highlight the complex interplay between the skin immune microenvironment and viral mutagenesis and reveal novel features of the HPyV7 virome.
