SAMES herbarium - Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo - Herbário Virtual REFLORA

The SAMES Herbarium, located at the North University Center of Espírito Santo (UFES/CEUNES), safeguards botanical records of plant collections from northern Espírito Santo and southern Bahia. Its focus is particularly on restinga vegetation, rocky outcrops, and tabuleiro forests, all set within a constantly changing landscape. Due to this context, the SAMES collection serves as a powerful tool for systematic knowledge and for understanding the evolutionary and biogeographic relationships of plants in this region—recognized as one of the most diverse plant areas in the world. Beyond documenting and studying the regional flora, our fundamental challenge is to educate and inspire citizens about their role in biodiversity conservation. This mission is captured in our motto: Connecting people to biodiversity.

O Herbário SAMES do Centro Universitário Norte do Espírito Santo (UFES/CEUNES) resguarda o registro de coletas botânicas das vegetações do norte do Espírito Santo e sul da Bahia, especialmente das restingas, afloramentos rochosos e florestas de tabuleiros inseridas numa paisagem em constante modificação. A coleção do SAMES, por conta disso, é uma poderosa ferramenta para o conhecimento sistemático e o entendimento das relações evolutivas e biogeográficas das plantas dessa região do país, notadamente reconhecida como a de maior diversidade de plantas do mundo. Nosso desafio, portanto, além de registrar e conhecer a flora regional, fundamentalmente constituiu em formar cidadãos conscientes de seu papel na conservação da biodiversidade. Isto se resume em nossa lema: Conectar pessoas à biodiversidade.
