VPRS 933 Defunct Business Firms

This series comprises files containing application forms and associated correspondence required to be lodged under the Registration of Firms Act 1892 (No. 1256) and subsequent legislation in the form of Part 2 of the Partnership Act 1915 and Business Names Acts from 1927.According to the provisions of the Act, each firm or individual conducting business within Victoria under a trading name not comprising the full given names of the individuals or partners concerned, was required to register the firm or business name. Registration was effected by the lodgement of a written statement containing the following detail:. firm or business name. type of business. place or places of business. full name, usual residence and other occupation of the person or persons carrying out the business, and. date of commencement of the business if this occurred after the proclamation of the first Act.The files contain this statement and subsequent documentation lodged relating to changes in the above detail. Certificates of registration were also sent to each registered individual or firm, however, no file copies appear to have been maintained.Microfilming of these records began in 1989. These records are destroyed immediately after microfilming. The microfilm master of this series has also been transferred (Refer VPRS .....).Disposal statusThese records were appraised as temporary under the provisions of Public Record Office Standard 92/1 Records Disposal Schedule for Business Name and Association Records.A portion of this series previously maintained in archival custody for expired registrations between 1893 and circa 1968 was approved for destruction in .... . The destruction of an alphabetical index to these records originally created by staff of the Archives Division, State Library was also approved.
