The terrible pandemic started in 2019 offered an unexpected and paradoxical opportunity to become aware of the purpose of school and to wonder about its future. Despite many difficulties, it was an opportunity to awaken the school life, to bring out its essential dimensions again and to implement numerous attempts of didactic creativity. This experience suggests some indications about the future of school, in an era that marks the irreversible decline of the nineteenth-century model of centralized education. There is the perception that it is necessary to go beyond school in order to achieve (in different forms) a radical deschooling; others believe that the prospective is indeed a further expansion of the school option, going in the direction of hyperschooling. Instead, we should think in a balanced way about the relationship between the permanent task of the school and school innovation, in order to generate an intelligent new scolarization.
