A photogranule-based bioprocess was started up from various inocula and under various inoculation conditions. Microbial communities were monitored during the initial batch phase and the following sequence batch operation of the bioreactors. 16S and 23S rRNA gene fragments were sequenced to follow total bacteria and more specifically phototrophic organisms.
