In our study we aimed at isolating and describing novel PAH degrading bacteria from a petroleum contaminated extreme environment, i.e. oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). OSPW are produced in large volumes by the surface-mining oil sands industry in Alberta and may (among others) contain complex mixtures of petroleum-derived organic compounds, high metal and salt contents.
