CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) at Admiralty Bay (ADB) for Adelie (PYD), chinstrap (PYN) and gentoo (PYP) penguins

Admiralty Bay is located on the eastern side of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands (Subarea 48.1). The USA has a long-term research program in this area and operates the Pieter J. Lenie Field Station (also known as Copacabana). Adelie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins have been monitored here and data has been collected on the following parameters for each species: **Adelie**: Breeding population size Duration of incubation shift Duration of foraging Breeding success Chick weight at fledging Chick diet Breeding chronology **Chinstrap**: Breeding population size Duration of incubation shift Breeding success Chick weight at fledging Chick diet **Gentoo**: Breeding population size Duration of foraging Breeding success Chick weight at fledging Chick diet Breeding chronology The data collected varies between years but monitoring for each species has been carried out almost every year since 1978. **Purpose of CEMP:** In order to provide information of the effects of fishing on dependent species, CCAMLR set up the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) in 1989. The two aims of CEMP are to: 1) Detect and record significant changes in critical components of the marine ecosystem within the Convention Area, to serve as a basis for the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources. 2) Distinguish between changes due to harvesting of commercial species and changes due to environmental variability, both physical and biological.
