Stories from expeditions included here: 1. Pilots of the Sikorsky Flying Boat were convinced it could reach from Chicago to Berlin. Both Robert H. Gast and Parker "Shorty" Cramer were professional pilots, and both lived and died in the air. 2. Chicago Tribune sponsored daring 1929 attempt to blaze an air mail route from Chicago to Berlin. Publisher, Colonel Robert R. McCormick, picked The Sikorsky S-38 Amphibion Flying Boat as the best aircraft for the job. 3. Sales of the S-38 Flying Boat rescued struggling Sikorsky Aircraft Manufacturing Company in 1929. Igor Sikorsky's brilliant design made S-38 "The World's Safest Airplane." 4. Remote and lonely outpost of Port Burwell, Labrador was nonetheless host to many imaginative expeditions. Author Holdridge (1925) and Geographer Forbes (1931-35) explored the area with schooners and seaplanes. 5. Great Circle Flight of the Sikorsky S-38 Flying Boat came to grief at Port Burwell; S-38 sank at Fox Harbor. Pilots, Mounties, and Native Inuits fought to save Big Flying Boat from murderous ice; lose battle on July 13, 1929.
