From Bad Faith to Reuse: An Empirical Study of Respondent Defences and Domain Life Cycles in UDRP Cases

Data Availability Statement The data supporting the findings of the article "From Bad Faith to Reuse: An Empirical Study of Respondent Defences and Domain Life Cycles in UDRP Cases" are publicly available via Zenodo. This data repository contains two comma-separated value (CSV) files: 'population_data.csv' contains case-level data for the full population of analysed UDRP decisions (1 January 2000 - 31 December 2024). Each observation represents a single case and includes variables relating to panel decisions, panel composition, panel framing, case language, complainant characteristics, and respondent participation. 'partial_study_sample_data.csv' contains domain-level data for the study sample used in the domain life-cycle and reuse analysis. Each observation represents a single witness domain name and includes variables on respondent defence strategies, respondent characteristics, domain availability and maliciousness status in 2025 (based on assessments from VirusTotal, RDAP and WHOIS), and registrar characteristics. The two datasets are linked via the variable case number. An inner join on this variable produces the complete analytical dataset used in the study sample, for example with the UNIX command: $ csvjoin -c "case number" population_data.csv partial_study_sample_data.csv > full_study_sample_data.csv To add a BOM do: $ printf '\ufeff' | cat - full_study_sample_data.csv > tmp && mv tmp full_study_sample_data.csv All variables are documented in the article, including categorical codings and the construction of prominence measures (frequency-based reverse rankings within the relevant dataset). No proprietary or confidential data are included. All data originates from publicly accessible UDRP case records administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum, in accordance with Paragraph 16(b) of the Rules for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy. The datasets enables full replication of the descriptive statistics, regression analyses, and domain life-cycle analyses presented in the article.
