Klebsiella variicola has emerged as a significant threat to global healthcare systems due to its increasing hypervirulence and antibiotic resistance. We collected K. variicola isolates from eight provinces in Korea and analyzed their molecular characteristics. Whole-genome sequencing of the isolates revealed a plasmid containing a horizontal gene transfer region, which includes carbapenem-resistant genes and mobile genetic elements. Our analysis indicates that the rising incidence of carbapenem-resistant K. variicola in Korea is attributable to the transmission of plasmids harboring these resistance genes. Consequently, ongoing monitoring of carbapenem-resistant K. variicola is essential.
