3D mapping of dislocation grain-boundary interactions in SrTiO₃ with DFXM

Grain boundaries (GBs) in functional oxides strongly obstruct dislocation motion, affecting both mechanical and functional properties. In SrTiO₃, GBs hinder dislocations and often initiate cracks, limiting dislocation-mediated functionality. We propose using Dark-Field X-ray Microscopy (DFXM) at the ID03 beamline to perform a high-resolution 3D study of dislocation–GB interactions in SrTiO₃ bicrystals (both low‐ and high‐angle boundaries). By correlating 3D dislocation networks with local strain fields near GBs, we aim to reveal the mechanisms behind slip transmission, pile-up, or crack initiation. This insight will aid in engineering tougher oxide ceramics with tunable properties. Our method uses Brinell indentation to generate high dislocation densities near GBs while preventing crack formation, yielding unique 3D maps of dislocation arrangements and elastic strains.
