This series consists of files produced by the Valuer-General’s Department . They contain correspondence with councils of municipalities, shires and counties, papers in relation to the valuation of land in these areas and recommendations made by the Valuer-General as to the estimates or valuations given.The files include valuation lists of rateable land within local government areas, requests for land valuations and valuations of specific properties. Also included are correspondence and related papers regarding the resumption of land by councils of municipalities, shires and counties, including compensation claims arising from resumptions of land. Land is generally resumed by councils in order to provide community services and facilities such as water supply, road widening and the creation of parks.The files are arranged according to municipality in alphabetical order. A large proportion of the records feature the file number prefix 'M&S' for municipal and shire councils or the prefix 'M' for municipality, followed by the year and a specific file number.
