Impact of burial and duration on seed viability of weedy rice

Weedy rice (<i>Oryza</i> spp.) has the capability to persist in the soil seedbank. This research was to examine the survival of weedy rice seeds subjected to various burial depths at different burial durations. The results showed the germination percentage declined progressively during burial with some weedy rice demonstrated the ability to survive in the seedbank up to five months, potentially allowing them to persist and re-emerge in subsequent planting seasons. The seed germination also declined significantly when they are left on the soil surface. Understanding weedy rice seedbank viability provides valuable insights on managing weedy rice infestation in rice-growing regions.
