The Chars74K dataset

Character recognition is a classic pattern recognition problem that has been investigated by researchers since the early stages of computer vision. With the widespread proliferation of cameras in modern society, applications of automatic character recognition have become more extensive than ever before. For Latin script, this task is largely regarded as solved under constrained scenarios, such as images of scanned documents featuring common character fonts and uniform backgrounds. Nevertheless, images acquired by consumer cameras and handheld devices still present substantial challenges to character recognition systems. The challenging facets of this problem are clearly demonstrated in this dataset.
