Resonance and adherence at the Machadinha Memorial

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the relations between the social actors who live in the Machadinha quilombola community and the culture preserved there. A heritage-society interaction in constant change throughout space and time, in which the community is permanently linked to the past and memory of the ancient farm, former sugar cane mill located in the region. This study focuses on the change in perceived narratives and the consequent reformulation of the permanent exhibition at the Machadinha Memorial, following its management change. The Memorial aims to be a cultural apparatus that emphasizes the memory and history of the quilombo. The text highlights the specificities of the relations between the population and the local public authorities, as well as the cultural heritage of the community, analyzing them based on Stephen Greenblatt’s concept of “resonance” and Luiz C. Borges and Marcio D’Olne Campos’ “adherence”.
