Geocryological and Paleoclimatic Conditions, Engineering Design and Construction on Anthropogenic Area of Marambio Island

The Marambio Island (Seymour) is situated in the continuous permafrost zone of
the Antarctic Peninsula. The ground conditions at this island determinate the
existence of various types of frozen ground, these characteristics of
components, active layer and permafrost depend on the Quaternary era of this
zone, the present climatic change and the antropic influence . In the present
project, we plan a study of the geocryological present and the old conditions
on the island, and then the geology-engineering of the Marambio Base area in
detail. The proposal is to determine the morphology, the temperature ground
regime, and the structure of the cryogenic ground, as well as find and
establish the correlation between the climatic change and the cryogenic
phenomena of the permafrost zone. The geology-engineering study allows
resolution of a great many of the problems related with the activities of the
Base. For these reasons we propose to establish some recommendations for the
rational usefulness of the area, and the preservation of the presence of nature
conditions on the freezing ground where the Marambio Base have been
constructed.

La isla Marambio (Seymour) se halla ubicada en la zona de permafrost continuo
de la peninsula Antartica. Las condiciones del suelo en esta isla determinan la
existencia de varios tipos de rocas congeladas, cuyas caracteristicas y las de
sus componentes, capa activa y permafrost, dependen de la historia cuaternaria
de esta zona, el cambio climatico actual y la influencia antropica. En el
presente proyecto se planifica realizar el estudio de las condiciones
geocriogenicas actuales y pasadas de la isla y de realizar estudios detallados
de geotecnia en el area abarcada por la Base Marambio. Se propone determinar la
morfologia, el regimen termico y la estructura de los suelos criogenicos y de
establecer la correlacion entre el cambio climatico y los fenomenos exogenos de
la zona de permafrost. Los estudios geotecnicos permitira resolver gran
cantidad de problemas relacionados con las actividades de la Base. Por ello se
propone establecer recomendaciones y lineamientos para el aprovechamiento
racional y la preservacion de las condiciones naturales de los suelos
congelados sobre los que se ha construido la Base Marambio
