IZW Media Archive

The IZW Media Archive contains various pools of data, including the Historical Image Archive of the Federal Waterways and the Historical Image Archive Internationale Mosel-Gesellschaft mbH & Moselkommission. The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration and its predecessor authorities have captured the changes and development of the federal waterways over the decades in a large number of photographs and thus created an important treasure trove of images. The large waterways have a lasting impact on the image of the German cultural landscape. The stock of images in the historical image archive is continuously being expanded. The valuable image stock of the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) is digitized by a scientific editorial team and stored with metadata. The motifs document the development of the construction work on the federal waterways. Images with a special historical significance for the federal waterways were assigned to the category K2200 by the specialist editors. The Historical Image Archive of the Federal Waterways consists of images of German waterways over the last 150 years and currently contains around 18,000 files. The purely digital and publicly accessible offer has existed since April 2010 under the umbrella of the Information Centre for Hydraulic Engineering at the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering.
