Samples from the fill of two cooking pits, two bell-shaped pits, four surface hearths, and one
burned area on the surface at site CA-SCL-714H in Gilroy, California, were floated to recover
charred macrofloral remains. This site represents a Protohistoric/Historic Costanoan occupation
around 1800 A.D. Macrofloral analysis will be used to provide information concerning plant
resources utilized by the occupants of this site, particularly use of foods available from the local
Spanish missions, such as corn, beans, oats, and barley, as well as use of marsh versus upland
resources.
