Desert biological soil crusts (BSCs), among the harshest environments on Earth , are formed by the adhesion of sand particles to polysaccharides excreted by filamentous cyanobacteria. These pioneers and main primary producers must cope with frequent hydration/dehydration cycles, extreme temperatures and irradiance in its habitat. Global transcriptome analyses on RNA isolated during natural dehydration distinguished early from late responding genes and showed the impacts of light and temperature.
