Qualitative Evidence Dataset for paper "Understanding the Evolution of Experimentation in Software Engineering Education: An Evidence-Based Educational Evolution Model"

Dataset Description This dataset contains the research materials supporting the study on the evolution of Experimentation in Software Engineering (ESE) teaching based on a repeated cross-sectional mixed-methods investigation conducted across two international survey waves (2020 and 2024). The dataset includes the survey instrument, the anonymized responses collected in both survey waves, and the complete qualitative coding audit trail used during the qualitative content analysis. Files 1. Instrument_Questionnaire.pdf Questionnaire used to collect data from instructors teaching Experimentation in Software Engineering. The instrument includes demographic questions, closed-ended questions regarding educational practices, and multiple open-ended questions investigating teaching resources, instructional practices, assessment strategies, learning objectives, educational challenges, and educational openness. The same instrument served as the basis for both survey waves, with minor updates introduced in the replication study. 2. original_responses.xlsx Anonymized responses collected during the first international survey conducted in 2020. The spreadsheet contains all original participant responses, including demographic information, closed-ended answers, and open-ended textual responses that served as the primary data source for the first stage of the repeated cross-sectional analysis. 3. replication_responses.xlsx Anonymized responses collected during the replication survey conducted in 2024. This dataset follows the same general structure as the original survey while incorporating additional questions addressing recent educational practices and emerging trends. It represents the second survey wave used in the repeated cross-sectional mixed-methods analysis. 4. Qualitative_Traceability_Dataset.xlsx Complete qualitative coding audit trail produced during the qualitative content analysis. This file provides full traceability from the original participant responses to the final analytical constructs reported in the paper. It includes: original responses; segmented meaning units; assigned open codes; qualitative categories; educational transformations; educational evolution patterns; representative quotations; qualitative codebook; category summaries; uncoded meaning units retained for transparency and future review. The dataset was created to maximize transparency, reproducibility, and auditability of the qualitative analysis. Every representative quotation presented in the paper can be traced back to its original participant response through the coding tables provided in this spreadsheet. Reproducibility Together, these files enable independent researchers to reproduce the complete qualitative analysis pipeline adopted in this study, from the original survey responses through coding, category construction, mixed-methods integration, and the derivation of educational transformations and educational evolution patterns. The dataset supports methodological transparency and facilitates secondary analyses, replication studies, and future investigations on Experimentation in Software Engineering education.
