In the 1980s, the Marine Environment Research Centre S. Teresa of the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Development (ENEA) developed a sophisticated relational database to archive marine environmental measurements collected with various types of instrumentation. The original database was conceived and designed by Aldo Bruschi, software developer, and implemented in collaboration with Giuseppe Manzella, oceanographer. The full data base has been available on ENEA’s web site until 2015, but due to missing upgrade of the system part of the original data set are now transferred to SEANOE repository. The dataset presented here is a partial extraction from that database, focusing on the Western Ligurian Sea and the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea. It includes data from 18 oceanographic campaigns conducted between 1980 and 1989 by ENEA and the National Research Council (CNR). The dataset contains measurements of four key physical parameters of the seawater column: Temperature [°C], Salinity [PSU], Potential Temperature [°C] and Potential Density [kg/m³–1000], collected across 1,204 vertical CTD profiles. The measurements were obtained with a Neil Brown conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensor, calibrated prior to each cruise at the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE, formerly the NATO Undersea Research Centre) in La Spezia, Italy. Seabed depth was measured using generic echo sounders. No further technical specifications of the instrumentation are available. The original database incorporated quality-control routines to minimize the entry of erroneous data. To ensure compatibility with modern environmental data standards, parameter names were aligned with the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) P01 controlled vocabulary.
