Current Questions on Migration (February 2026)

The short survey on current questions on migration was conducted by the opinion research institute Verian on behalf of the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government. During the survey period from February 4, 2026, to February 10, 2026, German-speaking people aged 14 and older were interviewed by telephone (CATI) about their attitudes toward immigration, refugees, and the German government´s migration policy. Respondents were selected using a multi-stage random sample as part of a multi-topic survey that included landline and mobile phone numbers (dual-frame sample). Agreement with statements on the topic of immigration to Germany (Overall, the integration of immigrants into German society has been successful so far; there are already so many immigrants living in Germany that no more can be accepted; immigration is causing a sharp rise in crime in Germany; I think it’s good that Germany is becoming more culturally diverse through immigration; Germany needs immigration, I think it’s good that Germany describes itself as a country of immigration); satisfaction with various aspects of the federal government’s immigration policy (how the government addresses the public’s concerns regarding immigration; how the goals and measures of immigration policy are explained to the public; efforts to date to integrate immigrants into the German labor market; efforts to date to find a European solution to immigration into Europe); concerns about the current number of refugees in Germany; short-term and long-term forecasts regarding the advantages or disadvantages for Germany resulting from the admission of refugees; opinion on how to handle refugees from Syria after the end of the civil war (as many refugees as possible should return to Syria quickly; only those who do not have a job here should be required to return; wait to make a decision until living conditions in Syria have improved); opinion on the establishment of asylum centers for refugees who have traveled on to Germany from other EU countries; opinion on housing people whose asylum applications in the EU have been rejected in return centers outside the EU; opinion on granting work permits after three months instead of six for people who have applied for asylum in Germany or are granted temporary residence. Demography: sex; age; education; employment status; household size; number of household members aged 14 and older; party preference for the next federal election; eligibility to vote; net household income (grouped); mobile phone vs. landline; internet use. The following were additionally coded: respondent number; interview date; locality size (BIK locality size and political locality size); federal state; East/West region; weight.
