A split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) investigation was carried out to verify a new method for quantifying stress-wave attenuation in granite. Using 74.4 mm-diameter high-strength steel bars (E = 214 GPa, c = 5236.8 m/s), the apparatus comprised a 398 mm striker and incident/transmission bars of 2745 mm/1792 mm. Strain gauges (1 MHz sampling and sensitivity coefficient of ) were positioned 1727 mm and 892 mm from the specimen interfaces. A 60 mm × 5 mm paper pulse shaper and petroleum-jelly interface lubrication ensured clean wave generation and minimal friction. Empty-bar tests validated one-dimensional wave propagation and precise alignment. Granite samples (ρ = 2730 kg m⁻³, P-wave = 4573 m s⁻¹, E = 5.71 GPa, ν = 0.28, UCS = 113 MPa) were cut from a single block to limit heterogeneity.
