A series of lectures given by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze at the University of Paris 8. This tenth lecture is organized within a 20-lecture seminar that Deleuze taught between October 1986 and June 1987, presented on February 24, 1987.

This seminar offers one of very few examples of a nearly complete session, with clear start and finish, but in contrast to the WebDeleuze transcript, the first eight minutes of the BNF recording starts with a presentation in progress by Richard Pinhas (musician and student of Deleuze), on the relation of Leibnizian concepts to music theory, notably accords, modulation, and pre-established harmony (a topic to which Pinhas will return in the Seminar’s final session on 2 June, 1987). Then Deleuze returns to the concept of freedom, briefly reviewing the pre-break session’s development of concepts establishing this reflection. He especially considers the choices the individual makes through deliberation, inclination, and the extent of individual amplitude. The discussion raises the concept of duration in such deliberation, which in turn leads to temporal considerations within the act. Several key references (from Jean Rousset, Quevedo, Walter Benjamin, as well as Leibniz) turn the discussion toward death and damnation, particularly the status of the “damned man” and Judas’s death. Finally, Deleuze returns to the succession of states as these relate to monads, to the soul’s amplitude and clarity, and hence, once again, to freedom.

Let us note that the new transcription and subsequent translation were possible in part thanks to the edited recording of the session published in 2003 by Gallimard (112 minutes) as a double CD titled “Leibniz: âme et damnation” [Leibniz: Soul and Damnation].

This dataset includes one .mp3 audio file of the original recorded lecture and the complete French transcription and English translation in odt format.
