The study’s subject is the number and use of motor vehicles in the German Empire from 1907 to - 1939. In a summary table, the information of the German Reich’s official statistics on the use of cars in the German Reich is presented. The information is differentiated into motorcycles, passenger cars and their use, listed by authorities, public transit, ambulances and commercial, professional, and other purposes (agriculture and forestry, trade or other business, other professions, entertainment and sports).
Until 1914 the registration of a motor vehicle in Germany included the information of the vehicles type of use. The German tax law privileged the commercial use of vehicles. Therefore, most of the driver assigned the commercial use as the main reason for the use of the vehicle. The resumption of the car registration statistics after the I. World War the differentiation of the car’s usage was disposed because of its detected disutility.
The investigator therefore draws mainly on the sources and literature about the cultural history and diffusion of motor vehicles. Initial point is the thesis, that motor vehicles in possession of private households at the beginning of the automobile age were used exclusively as consumer good. After being fully developed and after the offer of the needed infrastructure for their usage, they become more and more a commercial used means of production. Three stages of motorization are distinguished: motorization of the upper class, motorization of businessmen and manufacturer, and mass motorization.
