Maitiku research data

The record of the Maitiku alkaline fen builds on sparse existing data on tufa deposition in the eastern Baltic region. We present a high-resolution Holocene record from the Maitiku Springs alkaline spring-fed fen in western Latvia, which reconstruct the history of fen development and CaCO3 precipitation. This study integrates multiproxy evidence, including geochemical indicators, palaeobiological records, and radiocarbon ages of terrestrial plant macrofossils obtained from two sediment cores collected from the top and slope of the fen dome. The Maitiku fen has been active since approximately 9400 cal yr BP and shows two main phases of intensive CaCO₃ precipitation: between 6300–5200 cal yr BP and from around 3600 cal yr BP to the present.
