Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) biosynthesis in Propionibacterium freudenreichii relies on the availability of specific precursors, including 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBI), the lower ligand of cobalamin. Riboflavin (RF) serves as a precursor for DMBI synthesis, while nicotinamide (NAM) has been reported to enhance this metabolic pathway.
