Occurrence of fecal ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in horses

The objectives of this study were to (i) investigate the effect of different antimicrobial classes on immediate and long-term occurrence of ESBL-producing bacteria in the feces of antimicrobial treated and/or hospitalized horses, and (ii) to compare ESBL-producing strains from horses at admission (community strains) to strains isolated from hospitalized horses (hospital strains) and strains isolated after discharge to investigate potential transmission between hospitalized horses and persistence of particular ESBL-producing clones.
