资源简介:
Mercury contamination remains a critical public health concern, particularly in areas with high levels of industrial pollution. This study investigates the relationship between mercury exposure and genetic polymorphisms related to mercury metabolism in the population of Temirtau, Kazakhstan, an area known for elevated mercury levels due to industrial activities. We analyzed the frequency of GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1, and GCLM polymorphisms in residents of Temirtau to assess potential genetic susceptibility to mercury toxicity. Mercury levels were measured in biological samples, and participants’ dietary habits were evaluated to determine the main sources of exposure. The study found that the local population's mercury exposure levels were not as severe as those in well-documented poisoning cases, such as Minamata disease. However, the analysis of genetic polymorphisms revealed significant associations that suggest individual predisposition to the effects of mercury exposure, particularly among residents in remote areas of the Karaganda region. This research provides new insights into the toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics of mercury in a population exposed to environmental contamination. Continuous monitoring of mercury levels and further investigation of genetic factors are crucial for informing public health policies and preventive strategies aimed at mitigating the health impacts of mining activities in affected communities.
