The exact number of stations has varied over the long history of the program. One or more stations are located in each of the Bay's 92 segments. Sampling frequency has ranged from 20 times per year to 14 cruises annually. Synoptic sampling of all the tidal waters takes one to two weeks with the available funding, field staff and sampling vessel resources.
