Environmental impact assessment of discharges from pulp industry on Lavos coast - Figueira da Foz, Portugal (1986-87)

Two important paper mills discharge their effluents at a sandy
beach, 8 km south of Figueira da Foz. This study was carried out in the
intertidal and in the subtidal region. In the former, 15 stations were sampled
along 44 km of coast, for the physico-chemical and microbiological study. In
the latter 19 stations were sampled along 20 km, over 8 radials and at 500,
1000 and 1500 metres off the coast for the physico-chemical, microbiological
(surface and bottom) and planktonic study. Fishes and crustaceans were sampled
every two months at 19 stations during a year. From April to May 17 stations
were sampled in the subtidal zone, covering an area of about 72 sq.km., for
sedimentological and macrofauna study. In the intertidal zone 41 stations were
sampled along 20 km of coast.

The results have shown that local effluent emission was very polluted with
ponctual anoxie. The subtidal waters exhibited oceanic characteristics showing
its diluting capacity. The sedimentation of materials carried out by the
effluents, covering the beach, caused a negative visual impact.
