A Compiled Dataset of Jellyfish Swarming and Beach Stranding Events Along the Indian Coast (1970–2025)

This dataset compiles georeferenced records of jellyfish swarming and beach stranding events reported along the Indian coastline. Each record represents a documented jellyfish occurrence derived from published literature, scientific reports, and verified media sources spanning multiple decades. The dataset includes administrative location (State), geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude), year of occurrence, and taxonomic information (Class, Order, Species). Event characteristics are described using qualitative abundance categories (e.g., few, abundant), type of occurrence (swarming or beach stranding), and specific location details. Where available, the ecological, socio-economic, or operational consequences of each event (e.g., fishing net clogging, tourism impact, harvesting) are documented. Temporal coverage is provided through From_Date and To_Date, allowing representation of both short-term and prolonged events. Each entry is linked to its original information source, with full citation details and direct source URLs to ensure transparency and traceability. This dataset is intended to support analyses of seasonality, spatial distribution, long-term trends, and impacts of jellyfish aggregations and to facilitate coastal management, ecological research, and future citizen-science reporting initiatives. This dataset was compiled as part of an INCOIS initiative to provide comprehensive jellyfish information to key stakeholder sectors, support systematic monitoring of jellyfish occurrences along the Indian coast, and lay the foundation for future real-time monitoring and predictive jellyfish advisory services.
