<b>Revised Geological Map of Barro Colorado Island, Panama, v. 2022</b>

An updated version of the geological map of Barro Colorado Island (BCI) is now available. The file BCI_Oct_2023.rar is a compressed bundle that can be opened in a GIS system. Users can also view and download the spatial files in various spatial formats from the STRI GIS Portal. The chapter describing the map can be found in the attached file, Leon_et_al_Revised_Geologic_Map_BCI.pdf. The spatial files delineate the geological units of Barro Colorado Island. This layer shows the spatial extent of each geological unit of BCI, which was determined from a combination of field-based observations and topographic features from available digital elevation models. In this work, we provide an updated geological map of the island, together with petrographic descriptions of the main lithostratigraphic units. The sedimentary rocks outcropping in BCI comprise Oligocene to Miocene interlayered coarse-grained sedimentary rocks and intermediate-acidic volcaniclastic deposits, which record a shift from high-energy terrestrial to shallow marine settings. Basaltic-andesitic volcanic rocks are the youngest unit of the island and represent a sill complex emplaced within older strata. Morphometric analyses suggest that the lithology and associated weathering susceptibility exert strong control on the surface morphology of the island.
