V9Te8 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are nine inequivalent V sites. In the first V site, V is bonded in a 11-coordinate geometry to seven V and four Te atoms. There are a spread of V–V bond distances ranging from 2.47–2.97 Å. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.73–2.83 Å. In the second V site, V is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to five V and four Te atoms. There are a spread of V–V bond distances ranging from 2.46–2.74 Å. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.74–2.80 Å. In the third V site, V is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to three V and five Te atoms. The V–V bond length is 2.61 Å. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.72–2.82 Å. In the fourth V site, V is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to three V and five Te atoms. There are one shorter (2.60 Å) and one longer (2.63 Å) V–V bond lengths. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.71–2.79 Å. In the fifth V site, V is bonded in a distorted square pyramidal geometry to three V and five Te atoms. The V–V bond length is 2.82 Å. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.70–2.76 Å. In the sixth V site, V is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to three V and five Te atoms. There are one shorter (2.49 Å) and one longer (2.51 Å) V–V bond lengths. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.77–2.85 Å. In the seventh V site, V is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to four V and five Te atoms. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.77–3.00 Å. In the eighth V site, V is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to four V and five Te atoms. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.72–2.87 Å. In the ninth V site, V is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to four V and five Te atoms. There are a spread of V–Te bond distances ranging from 2.74–3.04 Å. There are eight inequivalent Te sites. In the first Te site, Te is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five V atoms. In the second Te site, Te is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six V atoms. In the third Te site, Te is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five V atoms. In the fourth Te site, Te is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five V atoms. In the fifth Te site, Te is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five V atoms. In the sixth Te site, Te is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five V atoms. In the seventh Te site, Te is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six V atoms. In the eighth Te site, Te is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six V atoms.
