MISSION-Nigeria: Expanding Access to Preventive Chemotherapy among Mobile and Migrant Populations through Social and Occupational Networks Informed by Community Mapping and Participatory Research

The study aims to fill a key gap in Nigeria’s NTD elimination efforts by addressing the exclusion of mobile and migrant populations (MMPs) from Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for Lymphatic Filariasis, Onchocerciasis, Schistosomiasis, and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis. Using a four-phase approach, it will assess baseline infection and MDA non-compliance, map migration routes and social networks, co-design and implement an adapted MDA delivery model with MMP communities, and evaluate both implementation and health outcomes. The study will enroll roughly 1,536 participants per community across three states and generate GIS-based migration maps, community-approved MDA prototypes, a replicable toolkit, and policy-relevant evidence. Overall, it seeks to provide the first integrated, co-constructed framework for effectively reaching MMPs in Nigeria and inform scalable strategies across sub-Saharan Africa.
