本册内容包括了鸟类导论和原始鸟类系统记述两个部分。导论部分包括鸟类的骨骼特征概述、起源和早期演化、定义和系统发育及分类、现生类群及其在中国的分布、中国鸟类化石的地史及地理分布、中国鸟类化石的研究历史等。在形态特征中对现代鸟类主要骨骼进行了介绍。在系统发育部分分别对中生代鸟类和现代鸟类的系统发育关系进行了介绍,主要是结合近期的中生代鸟类分支系统学研究的结果,对一些有高阶分类单元进行了解释,对一些曾经使用过的但却有争议的单元进行了讨论。 系统记述部分包括了截至2018年7月在中国境内已发表的、以中生代鸟类为主的83属92种,主要包括热河鸟目、会鸟目、孔子鸟目、反鸟类和今鸟型类。每个模式种均附有图片,对一些存有争议的高阶分类单元进行了概要评述。志书还提供了较完整的最新参考文献。本书是我国凡涉及地学、生物学、考古学的大专院校、科研机构、博物馆有关科研人员及业余古生物爱好者的基础参考书,也可为科普创作提供必要的基础参考资料。

This monograph consists of two sections: an Introduction to Birds and a Systematic Account of Primitive Birds. The introduction section includes an overview of the skeletal characteristics of birds, their origin and early evolution, definition, phylogeny and classification, extant avian taxa and their distributions in China, the stratigraphic and geographic distributions of Chinese avian fossils, and the research history of Chinese avian fossils. The subsection on morphological characteristics introduces the major skeletal elements of modern birds. The phylogeny subsection elaborates on the phylogenetic relationships of Mesozoic and modern birds respectively, mainly interpreting some high-rank taxonomic units by combining recent cladistic studies on Mesozoic birds, and discussing some previously used but controversial taxonomic units. The systematic account section includes 92 species belonging to 83 genera, mainly covering Jeholornithiformes, Sapeornithiformes, Confuciusornithiformes, Enantiornithes and Ornithothoraces, all of which were published in China prior to July 2018, with Mesozoic birds as the main focus. Each type species is accompanied by illustrations, and a brief review is provided for some controversial high-rank taxonomic units. This monograph also provides a comprehensive set of up-to-date references. This work is a foundational reference for researchers and amateur paleontology enthusiasts in colleges, universities, research institutions and museums involved in geosciences, biology and archaeology in China, and can also provide essential basic reference materials for science popularization creation.
