PULSE of the Gulf of Maine; Partnership for Pelagic Ecosystem Monitoring in the Gulf of Maine Data

PULSE, the Partnership for Pelagic Ecosystem Monitoring in the Gulf of Maine Data, collects weekly samples of the state of the pelagic ecosystem in the Gulf of Maine at two fixed sites: GoMOOS Buoy B and New Scantum on Jeffrey's Ledge.

CTD-hydrography Variables: Temperature, salinity, conductivity, fluorescence and sigma-t from the CTD cast at 1 m intervals. Sigma-t is a measure of density.

Zooplankton Species Abundance Variables: Species name, developmental stage or gender, number of animals in the sample, number of samples per unit area. Samples were collected on station from bottom to surface using two vertical ring net tows with 200 micrometer nets.

Zooplankton Dry Weights: Dry weight of zooplankton in the sample and dry weight per unit area. Samples were collected on station from bottom to surface using two vertical ring net tows with 200 micrometer nets.

Phytoplankton Variables: Chlorophyll_a and phaeophytin (starting 03/2004) pigment concentrations measured from water samples taken every 10 m depth from 0-50 meters. Phaeophytin is a digestion product of chlorophyll-a and can be found in the fecal pellets of zooplankton that graze on phytoplankton.

Nutrient Variables: Nitrate+nitrite (NO3_NO2), ammonium (NH4) and phosphate (PO4) measured from water samples taken every 10 m depth from 0-50 meters.
