A case of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) revealed an outbreak of Shiga-toxin 2 producing Escherichia coli O26:H11 infection in a nursery, with long-lasting shedders and person-to-person transmission, Italy 2015

After the occurrence of a case of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in Italy in 2015, an outbreak of Shiga-toxin 2 producing Escherichia coli O26:H11 infection in a nursery was detected, with long-lasting shedders and person-to-person transmission. The confirmed cases were treated with Cefixime and excluded from the nursery untill clearence was obtained. This helped containing the outbreak.
