Strain V6Fe1 was isolated from shallow marine sediment from Vulcano island (Italy). It is a moderate thermophilic (optimum 55°C-60°C) anaerobic bacterium growing optimally at a salinity of 20 g/L and at pH 6.5. It has a rod morphology, is non-mobile and non-sporulating, and uses diverse carbon and energy sources. Strain V6Fe1T is able to reduce iron(III), manganese(IV), nitrate and sulfur with a large set of electron donors, including molecular hydrogen. Interestingly, it is also capable of chemolithoautotrophic growth using H2 as an energy source and CO2 as carbon source using sulfur or nitrate as an electron acceptor. Based on phylogenetic analyses we propose it to represent a new species of a new species "Hydrothermobacter metallireducens". Here we describe the annotation of the complete genome sequence of the type strain, V6Fe1.
