Effect of Melatonin on Pasteurella multocida

Melatonin (MT) is a neuroendocrine hormone secreted by the pineal gland, widely existing in various tissues in the body. MT has a variety of physiological and pharmacological functions, including antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-aging, immune regulation, promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting cell apoptosis. MT can also regulate circadian rhythm, sexual maturity and reproduction, and is an efficient immune regulator, which can suppress adhesion molecules and reduce the generation of pro-inflammatory factors. In addition to the above functions, our investigations have also further found that MT has antibacterial effect on Pasteurella multocida. Based on this finding, the purpose of this project is to explore the antibacterial effect and mechanisms of melatonin.
