Trichoplax adhaerens is the only formally described species in the animal phylum Placozoa. Previous work suggested a hidden genetic diversity in the Placozoa. Given the lack of morphological characteristics and the assumption that single genetic markers are not enough to define a new animal species, we generated a high quality draft genome and transcriptome of a placozoan that is distantly related to T. adhaerens (based on 16S phylogenies), formerly called Placozoa sp H13.
