Whole-genome sequencing of Salmonella Umbilo isolates from buffalo calves during a European foodborne outbreak

This study investigates a multinational outbreak of Salmonella enterica serovar Umbilo across several European countries between July and September 2024. The outbreak was linked to the consumption of contaminated rocket salad and baby spinach traced to a horticultural facility in Salerno, Italy. Environmental and fecal samples were collected from three nearby buffalo farms. Whole-genome sequencing of Salmonella Umbilo isolates from buffalo calves confirmed genetic identity with the outbreak strain found in human cases and contaminated vegetables. This submission includes raw sequence reads and contigs from isolates obtained during the epidemiological investigation, carried out between December 2024 and February 2025.
