For the globally occurring peat moss species Sphagnum magellanicum, N deposition effects with respect to its microbial diazotrophic community have not been studied yet. Because of its abundance in ombrotrophic and oligotrophic sites from boreal to temperate regions (Laine et al. 2009), it is an attractive model species. To study impact of lowering N-deposition, S. magellanicum was collected from field sites exposed to either low or high N deposition over a long time period, and these were kept deprived of N for three years. Their associated microbial N2 fixation activity was tested and their diazotrophic community was compared.
