Intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis are a growing problem in human and animal health, and berberine, with anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity, presents a great potential to prevent and counteract these challenges. The mode of action of berberine seems to rely on its interactions with the gut microbiota, however clear evidences are still lacking. This project investigates the effect of low, middle and high doses of berberine in-feed on gut health and on the gut microbiota (jejunum, ileum, caecum, colon), as well as the contribution of berberine-derived metabolites to berberine-mediated effects on gut health.
