农业是指国民经济中一个重要产业。农业是指包括种植业、林业、畜牧业、渔业、副业五种产业形式；狭义农业是指种植业。包括生产粮食作物、经济作物、饲料作物和绿肥等农作物的生产活动。当代世界农业发展的基本趋势和特征是高度的商业化、资本化、规模化、专业化、区域化、工厂化、知识化、社会化、国际化交织在一起，极大地提高了土地产出率、农业劳动生产率、农产品商品率和国际市场竞争力。  自1949年建国后，中国农村经济得到了迅速的恢复和发展，农业生产条件和生产技术显著改善，产量水平迅速提高。经过近30多年来的发展，中国以仅仅相当于世界7%的耕地养活了几乎占世界五分之一的人口，取得了巨大的成就。据中国农科院估算，我国农业总产量中科技进步的贡献率由1972—1980年的27%提升到1981—1985年的30%～40%。

Agriculture is a critical industry in the national economy. It encompasses five major industrial categories: planting industry, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery, and sideline production. In its narrow sense, agriculture specifically refers to planting industry, which covers the production of various crops including grain crops, cash crops, forage crops and green manure crops. The fundamental trends and characteristics of contemporary global agricultural development are the intertwined highly commercialized, capitalized, large-scale, specialized, regionalized, industrialized factory-farming, knowledge-intensive, socialized and internationalized development patterns, which have drastically raised land productivity, agricultural labor productivity, the commodity rate of agricultural products and international market competitiveness. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China's rural economy has achieved rapid recovery and development. Agricultural production conditions and technologies have been remarkably improved, and output levels have risen rapidly. Following over 30 years of development, China has fed nearly one-fifth of the world's population with merely 7% of the global arable land, achieving tremendous accomplishments. According to estimates by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the contribution rate of scientific and technological progress to China's total agricultural output increased from 27% during the period of 1972-1980 to 30%-40% during 1981-1985.
