16S metabarcoding eastern English Channel

The eastern English Channel undergoes several anthropogenic perturbations in the last decades such as eutrophication and climate warming. This coastal temperate ecosystem is defined by the annual spring bloom of the Haptophyte Phaeocystis globosa, which is favored by the excess of nitrates, while silicates are depleted, as well as transient and recurrent diatom blooms. During blooms, bacteria proliferate that are specialized in the degradation of polysaccharides. The objective of the present study was to investigate the heterotrophic bacterial communities accompanying diatom and Phaeocystis blooming events and infer their functions on temporal scales in the coastal waters of the eastern English Channel. The present study reveals key bacterial taxa and potential functions associated with specific blooming events.
