Real-time simulators for training purposes are very useful considering the cost and fault damage reduction comparing to practice on real equipment. Building in house equipments in the universities allows, also, having platforms more appropriated to specifically training needs. Professional training for smart specialization must consider the correlation between research and development activities in universities, latest technologies used by industry and training specialization needs. This paper proposes, based on the analyzed needs for professional training, an educational system for specialized training in engineering education with application in multiple fields as: transportation, power systems, process engineering, chemical processes etc. The simulator has an open architecture that includes a human machine interface (HMI), an embedded industrial PC, data acquisition modules and one or more programmable logical controllers (PLC). The industrial PC with its computation abilities can conduct digital simulation of industrial processes that can be visualized and user controlled through the HMI. Also, from the HMI, process configuration and parameters can be customized and measurements displayed. The PLC configuration allows implementing different control scenarios. This open educational architecture allows multidiscipline training of teachers, students or professionals by making remote experimentation possible and applications in different subjects such as: system theory, control systems, fault diagnosis, system identification etc. The embedded-PC based approach for real time simulator has proven to offer a modular hardware and software architecture with good performance which could support more demanding and complex process models and control strategies needed for specialized training. The open architecture facilitates reconfiguration and development upon request with other ICT technologies (e.g. IoT compatible interfaces, SCADA, etc).
