Microbial community analysis at the anodes, cathodes and sediments of sediment microbial fuel cells was conducted. The sediment samples were collected before the electrode installation and from locations more than 5 cm away from the anodes of the control and SMFC-aeration consortia after the experiment. After the experiment, the cathodes and anodes of the control and SMFC-aeration consortia were also collected. 16S rRNA libraries targeted V3-V4 region were prepared and sequenced on a Miseq system.
