Soil samples were collected from ten sites across a wide area of the western Songnen Plain. At each site, three contiguous areas (non-vegetation, CK; grassland, G; and maize field, M) were established 5 years before sampling. For each treatment (CK, G or M), three sampling plots (1 m2 each) were randomly selected within an area of approximately 100 m2 in each of the contiguous areas. Soil sample for each plot was the mixture of soils collected from five places (“S” distribution) of 0-20 cm layer.
